What does TPM think about: Metal & Rock as a "bad influence"

Posted by ThePigeonMaster - October 30th, 2010

In my last blog I talked about stereotypes, now I'm going to express my thoughts about a big and stupid stereotype related to some musical genres.

In the last blog I didn't complain anything, but this time I just have to do it. I hate when a familiar or an adult says that I shouldn't listen to X music because I may end being a drug addict, a criminal or something even worse. I mean, What the fuck? Just because some groups tend to consume drugs it doesn't mean we have to do it. Sure, I know that some people start consuming them because if X group does it, I would be cool like them if I also did it. But that's not the point of this.

Genres like heavy metal, hard rock, rock n' roll are very popular these days, I also enjoy a couple of songs by SOAD, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Reel big fish. Not to mention like classic one such as Deep Purple and Kiss. Those bands and genres I mentioned are legends of music but I can't stand people saying they made a deal with the Devil, they have subliminal messages that fuck up your mind, if you listen to X song you'll end being a troublemaker, X band is a bad influence to the youngsters... Bad influence my ass. I gotta admit that I'm not myself a metalhead but I'm against to those unfair accusations and myths about certain music genres. And, as I mentioned before, I do enjoy a couple of songs.

I've always liked listening to music and learning to play some instruments such as the electronic keyboard, flute and the acoustic guitar. I also have made some tunes on FL studio and uploaded them to the Audio Portal. I do enjoy to create anything that is related to music. Heh, I even did some YTPMV's in the past. I do like all of the musical genres, I enjoy listening to Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Queen, Daft Punk, Guns n' Roses, the ones I mentioned before and even more... Except reggeaton, that genre sucks ass to me now because all of the songs talk about money, sex and girls ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I just got tired of it.

What I'm trying to say is that music is music, no matter what. And even if the lyrics of a song talks about the Devil and that stuff, I just don't give a shit about it. Listening to bands like Iron Maiden won't make me a criminal or make me sell my soul to the Devil. Period.

If people decide to be anarchists, sell their souls to the devil, start consuming drugs just because the lyrics of a song talk about them then it's their problem.

Yeah, there are jackasses that still think this way. They're just ignorant and nothing more. If they were tolerant enough, they'd know only a minority of metal bands sing about satan and shit. Band I listen to such as Blind Guardian and Rhapsody aren't even pro-Satanism. If anything, they have songs singing about defeating the devil. Just shows how little these morons know about rock music.

As a matter of fact, I don't stereotype rap and hiphop. Sure, it's not my cup of tea overall but I know rap and hiphop only talk about bitches and hoes. I know there's more to those genres than that. Maybe it doesn't help the rap's reputation with certain key artists but if people looked outside the box, they'll know rap and hiphop don't sing about bitches and hoes.

I'm just glad I don't know anyone personally who enforces this stereotypical bullshit. I know a few Christians but they're not the douchey type or anything like the Westboro Baptist Church and thank God for that (no pun intended). A fair number of my friends may not be into heavy metal but they're still great individuals at the end of the day.

Don't forget most of them don't even recognize the differences between rock and metal. Yeah, it's pretty sad how some people blame at certain bands and songs without a good reason.

A great example of that, is the amount of trolls and users in the comments of any musical video of any genre in YouTube.

Well, most of the times I hear these things, they come either from the elderly or people who are making fun of it. I don't know, I think it was such a major change when Elvis began shaking like crazy, that this though of rock being the "devil's music" carried on.

Although there's stupid people everywhere - I've heard of a few cases of people who committed crimes / suicide etc... being under the influence of lyrics from rock songs (one of them was with Ozzy, I think). And those standalone cases gave it a bad name.

Honestly, people are narrow-minded. Yeah, there are some satanist bands, and they all play heavier music. Some songs talk about "bad" stuff, some musicians died because of drugs... Does it mean that if I start a rock band I'm a satanist? Do I want to die or use drugs (or both :P)? No, not at all.

I guess it's a cultural thing. If, in the past, people have said it was the devil's music, then it's GOTTA BE THE DEVIL'S MUSIC! BRING THEM CROSSES!! :P

Oh, and where's that picture from? :)

Happy Halloween from Brazil! (at least it's midnight in here :P)

I totally agree with you in the 3rd paragraph. As I've already explained, it's my own decision if I want to consume drugs or start praying to the Devil, Death, or whoever I want.

I enjoy music, you enjoy it, Bahamut enjoys it, everybody else enjoys it. Period.
Got offended or started to believe or live up to the lyrics? That's your own problem.

And about the picture, I just typed "metal concert" in Google :P
lol

Honestly, I gotta say that I simply hate bands such as Slipsknot and Cannibal Corpse, and I love everything related to rock, such as Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Kiss, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and so on...

I completely agree with you, dude, we don't do idiot things because of music, it's simply idiot.

I love to have parents that love rock, they just love it, and because of them, I know A LOT of Rock, he showed me 3/4 of the bands I know now, and they don't say: "Stop listening this! It's crap".

Rock simply... Rocks!

I wish there were more people like us :(

<3 Idk brofro.

OMFG YOU'RE STILL ALIVE!
